The Oakwold Estate was built between 1880 - 1883 by the well known Boston firm of Rotch & Tilden for the family of Augustus Day, the great-grandson of John Jay, statesman during the American Revolution who was later named first Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. Augustus, a diplomat and secretary at the American Embassy in Paris, and his wife, a descendant of the John Jacob Astor family, would summer in Paris and in Newport at Oakwold.
