Minamihara is one of the most premier and prestigious villa district of the town. The area was originally developed by Prof. Kesazo Ichimura, a scholar and then professor of political science of Waseda University. Prof. Ichimura, who was also a large landowner of Karuizawa, created a villa district for scholars here with famous jurist, Dr. Sakae Wagatsuma, and other founding members. They created the Karuizawa Minamihara Association (Minamihara Bunka-kai) as a villa owner's community here and created a common space at the center of this Minanihara zone. There is a tennis court in the common space, but usage of it is restricted from morning to 2 o'clock in the afternoon, not to bother a studying time for the owner scholars. (Tennis makes some ball noises.) That unique rule is still effective today.
This property is at the center of Minamihara, with its area of over 1,700 sqm. It is located at the corner of Minamihara Street and Ni no Tori Street, which leads to tennis court of Minamihara Bunka-kai toward westbound. So, this place is like an entrance to traditional Minamihara community. By walking along neatly managed pedestrian paths in the area, you can feel that this is a first class villa district which is supported by good wills by community members to protect this precious environment.
