The Sierra Madre Ranch is located just inside the Medicine Bow National Forest along the Sierra Madre Mountain Range, 4.1 miles southwest of the small town of Encampment via Water Valley Road. Consisting of 320 acres with 160 acres irrigated from the Ernest Ditch, the ranch is bordered on two sides by national forest and the other two sides by BLM lands. The property includes three streams and two small irrigation ponds with a variety of terrain that includes native grass meadows with forty percent of the ranch in lodge pole pine and quaking aspen. The ranch provides winter range for bighorn sheep and elk and includes mule deer, moose, black bear, dusky grouse and wild turkey. There are brook trout in the creeks with excellent fishing for brown and rainbow trout in the nearby Encampment River. The ranch has a one room restored cabin near the center of the ranch with several old homestead cabins still remaining. Water rights include 4.47 cfs with a priority date of 1918.
